BALLOT INNITIATIVE 161: VOTE NO
Innitiative 161 is a Ballot Innitiative which seeks to eliminate “Outfitter Sponsored Guaranteed Tags". Each year, nearly 7,000 of these tags are sold to non-residents through Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks. This accounts for about $10,500,000 in revenue which accounts for 85% of lands now available and managed for Public Hunters, Montana residents.
The man behind the innitiative argues that by eliminating these tags and increasing the price of the draw tags (that’s right, you’ll pay more), this would open up more private lands to resident/public hunters. Being that I’ve managed some prime private land for the past 12 years, I can assure you that this is not the answer and I have NO IDEA what Mr. Kephart is talking about, other than his own ability of special interest, he’s got the money and the time.
Private land owners lease their land to Outfitters because Outfitters are professionally trained in managing hunters. Landowners don’t want people driving ATV’s all over their property, cutting fences, running cattle, littering and basically disrespecting the land and it’s owners, who are stewards of preserving hunting, not eliminating it.
